Intern - Risk Performance & AI Automation
JCAP
JCAP is a global macro hedge fund investing across public and private markets, asset classes, and geographies - combining institutional rigor with entrepreneurial agility.
Purpose of the Job
We are looking for a motivated intern to support the Risk and Performance function at our Hong Kong headquarters, with a focus on Liquid Assets. Working closely with the risk and performance lead, you will assist with portfolio risk monitoring, investment performance analysis and reporting, and the development of new analytical tools and automated workflows using AI and programming.
Responsibilities
- Assist with monitoring portfolio exposures, concentration, leverage and liquidity, and flag material changes or potential risk limit breaches for review.
- Support portfolio risk analysis, including volatility, drawdowns, value at risk (VaR), stress testing and scenario analysis, under guidance.
- Assist with calculating and validating portfolio returns and profit and loss (P&L), comparing performance against benchmarks, and analysing performance attribution and key return drivers.
- Help prepare regular risk and performance reports, dashboards and presentation materials for internal stakeholders and management.
- Collect, reconcile and validate portfolio, pricing, benchmark and market data; investigate discrepancies with Investment Operations and other relevant teams.
- Identify opportunities to automate recurring data preparation, reconciliation, risk monitoring and performance reporting tasks using Python, SQL, Excel or other suitable tools.
- Help design, build and improve internal tools and dashboards using AI-assisted coding and generative AI, translating risk and performance needs into practical prototypes and applications.
- Test and validate new tools, calculations and AI-generated outputs against source data and existing reports; document workflows and support ongoing improvements, using approved tools and appropriate data handling practices.
- Assist with ad hoc portfolio analysis, market research and risk and performance projects as required.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree (at least four semesters completed) or a postgraduate degree, or a recent graduate, in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills, attention to detail, and an interest in financial markets, investment risk and performance measurement.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with Python or another programming language; experience with SQL, VBA, APIs or workflow automation is an advantage.
- Interest in applying AI to investment analytics and business processes; hands-on experience with AI-assisted coding, generative AI tools, or building dashboards and applications through coursework or personal projects is an advantage.
- Basic understanding of financial instruments, portfolio concepts and statistics; familiarity with Bloomberg or portfolio management systems is an advantage.
- Clear communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaborate with investment and operations colleagues.
- Strong organisational skills, a willingness to learn, and the ability to meet deadlines and handle confidential investment information responsibly.
